Sometimes I get this feeling of knowing. I just know that something is going to happen. Sometimes I even hear it as a voice, telling me something is going to happen. I have learned to pay attention to this feeling, this voice, even when it sounds crazy or seems impossible.
One day, many years ago, my sister mentioned that Columbia University had a program for pre-med students.
“That’s where I’m going,” said a voice in my head. This made no sense. At the time I was working at Children’s Hospital, a Harvard-affiliated hospital, and I had applied to Harvard’s pre-med program. My boss, Dr. Fyler, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School, had written me an excellent letter of recommendation. I could live with my parents while I went to Harvard, which would be so much cheaper than living in New York City. Plus, it was, you know…Harvard!
But, because of the voice, I applied to the Columbia program. Once I got into both programs I weighed the pro’s and con’s.
Harvard was way ahead, until…
An administrator at the Harvard program told me I would have to wait two years to get a letter of recommendation from their pre-med committee, even though I was one of the first accepted in the class (assuming I did well in the program). He went on to tell me this was because I was one of the youngest student in the program and they would give preference to older students.
What? What kind of ageist crap was that?
I checked with Columbia’s program. If I completed the program in two semesters (and did well), I would get a letter of recommendation from Columbia University’s pre-med committee at the end of that time.
Hello, Columbia! And, a couple of years later, hello, medical school!
When we listen to that intuitive voice, that inner knowing, good things happen. Now, I’m not saying to ignore other information. I didn’t apply to Columbia instead of Harvard. I just added Columbia to the mix and considered it. That’s all we have to do. Consider it–the alternative, the odd idea, the far-out possibility.
The more we listen to our inner voice, our inner wisdom, the clearer the message. And the message is always for our highest good. That’s my belief, anyway, after watching so many of my clients begin to trust their own inner knowing, as well as seeing it played out in my own life.
Try tuning in to your own inner knowing. What would it say to you right now?
